IIT MTech Admission Process 2026 – Check the Selection Criteria and Other Details

For many engineering students, getting into an IIT for MTech is their ambition. It provides excellent placement prospects, access to cutting-edge research, and high-quality education. However, the GATE exam is the first significant step in the process of pursuing an M.Tech at IIT. Thousands of students take the GATE exam each year in an attempt to gain admission to prestigious IITs. Although the competition is fierce, success is achievable with the correct planning and approach.

IIT MTech Admission Process 2026

StepProcess
1GATE Score Submission
2IIT-Specific Application Forms
3Shortlisting Based on GATE Score and Academic Record
4Written Test and/or Interview
5Final Merit List and Seat Allotment

Students should follow the following 3 processes.

Process 1: Verify Your Eligibility

Verify that you meet the prerequisites before beginning the application process. What you usually require is as follows:

  • Nationality: The applicant needs to be a citizen of India.
  • Education: The applicant should be a graduate of an AICTE-accredited university with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology.
  • GATE Score: A strong Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score is required for the majority of MTech programs at IITs and IISc.

Process 2: Making an Online Application

  • Registration: The first step is to register online using the Common Offer Acceptance Portal, or COAP. A few facts, including the candidate’s name, birthdate, GATE registration number, GATE paper, and GATE score, are needed in order to register on this portal.

A COAP registration ID will be generated following completion of the COAP registration form. IIT applications will be submitted using this COAP registration ID. For COAP, there won’t be any registration costs. The first step of the registration procedure is now complete.

Candidates must register separately at the IITs using the COAP registration ID. Each IIT’s application forms are available on their website. Candidates must submit individual applications to the IITs that interest them. Candidates must have their COAP registration ID when they apply to IITs.

  • Choice Filling: In the COAP, each of the 24 IITs will list the MTech specialisations they provide. Candidates can use the same webpage to fill out their choices.

Process 3: Procedure for Selection

During specific dates, participating IITs will submit their available MTech seats, and registered candidates will be able to select any offers that become available during each round. In each round, a candidate may choose no more than one offer from among all those that are available. In each main round, candidates will have THREE alternatives.

Option 1: Accept and Freeze

If a candidate is willing to accept one of the offers that are made and does not want to be evaluated for an upgrade to a higher preference, if any, in the next round or rounds of admission, they should choose this option. Applicants who choose this option will not be taken into consideration for admission to any of the participating academic institutions in the next round or rounds. The candidate should click the submit button to ensure that their decision has been submitted after selecting the “Accept and Freeze” option.

The candidate should go to the relevant IIT’s MTech Admission portal for further admission after choosing an offer of admission with the “Accept and Freeze” option. The applicant must finish the admissions process by the deadline set by the admissions office.

Option 2: Retain and Wait

If a candidate indicates that they partially accept any of the offers that are offered and would like to be evaluated for an upgrade to their higher preferences, if any, in the next round or rounds of offers, this option should be used.

Candidates that choose this option will not be given consideration for the other offers that were turned down in this round. However, if a better preferred offer is made in the upcoming round, the current “Retain and Wait” offer will be made available. However, a candidate may only select “Retain and Wait” twice on the same offer (same program, same institute).

However, in the next round or rounds of admission offered by the participating academic institutions, the candidate will be given consideration for additional higher preferences. The candidate should click Submit to indicate that the decision has been submitted after selecting the “Retain and Wait” option.

Option 3: Reject and Wait

If the candidate is hesitant to accept any of the admission offers in the current round, this option should be used. However, in the next round or rounds of admission offered by any participating academic institutions, the candidate will be given consideration for other higher preferences.

Please be aware that since you turned down the offer, it won’t be made again. The candidate should click Submit to indicate that the decision has been submitted after selecting the “Reject and Wait” option.

During each offer round, candidates should check the COAP Portal until they choose to “Accept and Freeze.” A candidate will mark all offers made during a given round of offers as “Rejected” if they do not access the COAP or do not make a decision during that round.
