The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is currently conducted in 50 test centers in India, and over 20 test centers are dedicated to computer-based exams. Until July 2021, the exam was delivered jointly by IDP and the British Council, and now, it is solely managed by IDP.
IELTS is divided into two modules: Academic and General Training. The IELTS General Training module tests a candidate’s daily use of the English language and is mainly required for immigration cases. While IELTS Academic is required for study abroad admissions. For Indian candidates, the IELTS registration fee is INR 14,700.
IELTS Exam Format and Pattern
The IELTS exam is available in two formats: paper-based and computer-based. The IELTS paper-based test is conducted in a traditional form at an official IELTS test center. On the other hand, the computer-based format allows students to take the test from any convenient location with a reliable internet connection.
The exam pattern for IELTS is similar for both the modules and computer and paper-based formats. The IELTS exam consists of four sections, namely Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.
The IELTS test duration is 2 hours 45 minutes, with 60 minutes each dedicated to Reading and Writing, followed by 30 minutes for Listening, and 11-14 minutes for Speaking.
IELTS Registration
Candidates can register for the exam as early as three months prior to the test date and latest by one week before the test date. Test takers can register for the IELTS exam in the following ways:
- Online: Create an account online on the official website of IELTS IDP India.
- In Person: Got to any nearest IDP branch and or Input Node.
- By Courier: Download the registration form from the website and send the completed form by courier to the address provided. Pay the IELTS test fee by Demand Draft or ICICI deposit/HDFC deposit slip.
IELTS Slot Booking
Test takers can book the exam multiple times in a year as they have the flexibility to register for IELTS exam slot booking at their convenience. Candidates can book a slot for the IELTS exam in two ways – online and offline.
For online IELTS slot booking, candidates need to visit the IELTS IDP official website, create their profile, and select their preferred IELTS test center and exam date. For offline IELTS slot booking, visit the nearest IELTS test center and submit the registration form at the local test center. The test center will send a confirmation of the date and time for slot booking.
